Understanding the Mardi Gras Celebration

Mardi Gras is an annual festival celebrated by many countries before Ash Wednesday. The literal meaning of Mardi Gras in French is, "Fat Tuesday." In some countries such as Brazil, Mardi Gras is also known as Carnival. The festival is an opportunity to enjoy rich, delicious foods before the ritual fasting of the Lent season begins. With Ash Wednesday comes 40 days of fasting and dietary restrictions.

The City of New Orleans in Louisiana, is a vibrant tourist attraction for Mardi Gras in the United States. Crowds of people take to the streets and enjoy dancing, music and lavish food.
