Homestead Exemption Explained

GA Property Exemptions

A homestead exemption is a state or local tax break that exempts a certain amount of the value of property upon which a property tax is based. This varies based on each state. For the state of GA, the standard exemption is $2,000 which is deducted from the 40% assessed value of the homestead. Individuals over 65 and older may claim a $4,000 exemption. Property taxes must be filed by April 1st of the following year from when the property was purchased. If this deadline is missed, the homestead exemption may not be granted until the following year and will result in loss of exemption for the current year.
